One key difference between the writer and the academic, according to Elbow, is the amount of reading each does. Elbow believes that an academic focuses on reading great works and studying them, whereas a writer spends his time writing. This distinction is very important because it changes the way that Elbow teaches his students.  Because he wants his students to consider themselves writers instead of academics, Elbow has his students read fewer literary works and instead has them spend their time writing. When Elbow does have his students read it is mainly out of his student created magazine so they can learn from each other and from reading their own writing.

historymajor255 on paragraph 1:

I changed my response from in class by adding more about how Elbow’s teaching changed. In class I didn’t have time to mention the magazine or why it was important in Elbow’s class. I also changed a few gramatic problems, apparently I can’t spell ‘difference’ when I write quickly.
